Let’s Be Islands Together / survey
Starting January 4th, I’m inviting people in the Comox Valley to share their unique experiences of loneliness and belonging. Using an anonymous survey that incorporates a feedback loop, my aim is to make this process reciprocal. As participants complete the survey they have the option to watch via livestream as I visualize their responses, in real time.
live-stream
During studio hours, I’ll be visualizing participant’s information on YouTube as it is submitted. You can watch without an account, and broadcasts are archived for seven days.
This project runs from January 4 2023, to January 30 2023.
Office hours are Wednesday - Saturday, 9am - 1pm and 3pm-5pm.
more information
My name is Sarah Clark and I’m a data artist and citizen scientist. Welcome to the first phase of Let’s be Islands Together, an arts-based research project. From Jan 4 - 30 2023, I’ll be installing a data artwork based on the regional state of loneliness at the Comox Valley Art Gallery on Vancouver Island, Canada.
I hope you’ll join me, as a participant if you live in the Comox Valley, or as a viewer if you live elsewhere!
The invitation for is for both of us - researcher and participant - to engage as equals working towards a common goal. As you experience the impact of our exchange, your data becomes a mirror rather than disappearing into a void. It’s a survey that’s also a conversation. Through our mutual investment in sharing our experience of loneliness, we build connection and collective knowledge.
Your contribution will be added to a collaborative data artwork that responds to community voices. You can see this work in person at the Comox Valley Art Gallery, follow updates on Instagram, or tune into my YouTube stream.
My hope is that this research will not only allow us to reflect on our own experiences, but also to identify groups in need and explore modalities for outreach.
As the author of this project, I take the protection of your personal information very seriously. This survey does not collect personal identifiable information. This work is self-initiated, without commission or direct remuneration. Please read the Terms and Conditions to learn more.
Thanks in advance for your participation. By contributing, you’re helping to build community resilience. Sharing is caring.
We're all in this together!
Love, Sarah
acknowledgments
Most importantly, I’d like to acknowledge the K’òmoks First Nation on whose land I have the privilege of working.
Let’s be Islands Together builds on the important work done by the Jo Cox foundation, BBC’s Loneliness Experiment, and the Wellcome Collection, a museum dedicated to thinking deeply about the connections between science, medicine, life and art.
Thank you to the Comox Valley Art Gallery for their continued support of this project.
