Letter From Masanjia
Peabody Award–winning filmmaker Leon Lee’s Letter from Masanjia is a powerful documentary that exposed human rights abuses within China’s labor camp system. The film follows the story of Sun Yi, a political prisoner and Falun Gong practitioner, whose secret letter—discovered in a box of Halloween decorations in Oregon—sparked global outrage and ultimately contributed to policy reform and the reported abolishment of China’s labor camp system.
I led the creative direction, design, animation, and editing of the film’s opening title sequence, crafting a visually compelling introduction that set the emotional tone for the narrative to follow. Drawing on an expressive visual language, the sequence blends subtle motion, typography, and symbolic imagery to foreground the human story behind the global headlines.
The film premiered to critical acclaim and was nominated for Best Feature Length Documentary at the 7th Canadian Screen Awards. Its release brought international attention to the realities of forced labor in China and has since been recognized as a landmark contribution to documentary film and human rights advocacy.
