Cumberland 125 | quantifying belonging

Democratizing data at a grassroots level creates an opportunity for people with different ideas and ideologies to focus on the things they have in common.

Commissioned by the Village of Cumberland to commemorate their 125th Anniversary, this project offers residents the opportunity to reflect on their relationship to community. Cumberland 125 is an interactive project designed to illuminate our relationship to ourselves, to our loved ones, and to our community. This project is for anyone who’s experienced connection or disconnection, compassion or indifference, belonging or longing.

Where do you fit into the story of this socially, economically, culturally and environmentally complex land we call home?

Residents of Cumberland BC are invited to participate in the project by sharing their reflections through this anonymous survey. Join me in person on June 10th at the 125th anniversary celebration, where you’ll have the opportunity to participate in the creation of an artwork that reflects your contributions to the project. Together, we’ll see what shape emerges from our collective stories. I look forward to working with you to create something meaningful and reflective of our shared experience of belonging.

Your participation is one hundred percent anonymous and held with care.

This work is supported by Heritage Canada, the Comox Valley Arts Council, Elevate the Arts and the Village of Cumberland.

“We are all connected; to each other, biologically. To the earth, chemically. To the rest of the universe atomically.”
